Addiction
Addiction is not only about substances. It can look like endless drinking, gambling, pornography, work, gaming, or even constant busyness. Each one offers temporary escape from an inner storm. For many veterans and members of the Emergency Services, these behaviours begin as ways to cope with trauma, stress, or shame. The substance or habit is not the enemy. It is a clue to where the pain hides.
Why Addiction Is Not the Core Issue
The behaviour is a symptom, not the cause.
When someone lives with trauma, their nervous system never truly rests. Substances and compulsive habits release short bursts of dopamine and calm, tricking the brain into believing it is safe. Over time, those bursts become a dependency.
The truth is, the action of getting high or drunk is a simple want or need to feel. It could be an unconscious compulsion or a conscious decision to drink; it’s done because they want to feel something and replace the numbness that is present.
Save A Warrior UK is not a rehab or detox service. To attend our programme, we ask for a minimum of 30 days of sobriety. You give us 30 days of sobriety, and show up chemically sober, we will return someone who is emotionally sober.
Recognising the Signs in Someone You Care About
Addiction does not always look chaotic. Sometimes it hides behind control, routine, or silence. You might notice:
Mood swings that follow cycles of use or withdrawal.
A shift in priorities. Work, family, or hobbies fade.
Secrecy or defensiveness around habits or money.
Shame and isolation after each relapse.
Talking About It Without Shame or Fear
Approaching someone about addiction can feel like walking through a minefield. The goal is not confrontation. It is compassion.
A few steps to start gently:
Replace accusation with empathy.
“I know life has been heavy lately. I have noticed you have been drinking more. Is everything alright?”Keep your focus on pain, not behaviour.
“I think something underneath all this is hurting. You do not have to face it alone.”Avoid ultimatums unless safety is at risk.
Connection works better than control.Suggest support rather than demand change.
“I came across a programme that helps people work through what sits underneath addiction. Would you want to hear about it?”
If they are not ready, stay patient. Every conversation plants a seed.
